Prologue to a new story I'm working on...

There is an inherent danger in assuming that all humans are intrinsically good.  There are some who, by nature, are evil.

Demons are an example of this.  Once human, they were - even as children - creatures of havoc, mischief, and malevolence.  They bear death, destruction, and despair in their wake, causing confusion and agony to every creature that they touch.  Thus they were considered as soulless entities (a complete fallacy as every demon you would have the misfortune of meeting would tell you) whose only purpose was to cause pain.

When Lucifer was cast into the pits of hell, the malevolent souls of these creatures were cast into this realm with him. His to command and his to make use of.

As time went by, some of these demons were allowed to roam the realm of humans.  They interacted with humans and were even borne to humans.  They capture the souls of each unborn child and consume them, taking their place in the womb of an unknowing couple who would then pave the way for them to enter our reality.  No one knows why God allows such sacrilege.  It may be because He would like to test the human's faith in Him, or that He would like to be fair to all His creations.  Whatever the reason may be, it is there and those who know of this fact just accept it as a part of reality, no more real than our need for air and food.

Now demons are not known for their capacity to love and care for another creature.  They are believed to only care about their own well-being and cause indescribable pain to others.  There is, however, an old wives' tale that has been passed on from generation to generation that if a demon gives his life up so that another will live, and this act was borne out of unconditional love for another, then the demon shall be cured of all evil and will be allowed to live as mortals do, and - inevitably - win a chance of being accepted through the Gates of Heaven.

Again, no one knows if this is true or not, for no demon has ever been able to win a chance to face the Lord beyond the Pearly Gates, and no demon had ever voiced their earnest desire to do so.  So the tale remains as such: an old wives' tale passed on from generation to generation, with no proof of ever being true.
